Flooding spreads disease

Flooding spreads disease
With dogs now starting to go back on the areas that have recently been flooded we have been asked a lot of questions regarding any concerns about going on these areas.

The main concern we have had is the possibility in an increase in Leptospirosis, also referred to as Weil’s disease. This disease not only affects dogs but also can infect people. This is mainly spread by contact with rat and fox urine directly or in contaminated water. It is a highly infectious bacteria that enters the body through cuts and scrapes, or the mouth, nose and eyes. In the early stages of the infection signs can be vague, but can include lethargy, high temperature, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. If untreated the infection goes on to cause fatal liver and kidney failure. Leptosirosis likes damp conditions to survive so we would advise rinsing your dog and drying them on return from their walk. But most importantly ensure your dog is up to date with its vaccinations as it is the only proven way to prevent the disease. If you have any questions please contact us.
