There’s a common myth that once the calendar flicks over into autumn and winter, fleas stop being something to worry about.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. If anything, autumn is a time when they’re actually slightly worse – so now’s a good time to talk about them! With central heating, fleas can survive inside your home – and other people’s homes – no matter how cold it gets. So it’s really important to keep flea treatment going through the winter months.
As well as fleas, the spot on medication will also protect your pet against lungworm – a nasty parasite that is passed to our pets when they eat slugs or snails. And we all know, the harder it rains, the more these little pests come out to munch in our gardens!
Members of our Pet Health Club get their parasite treatments included for no extra cost!
If you struggle to remember to give your pet their flea treatment, you could consider adding it to your digital calendar or creating some other form of reminder.
And if you have any questions about how often to give treatment to your pet and their specific circumstances, please do ask our team.
What to do if your pet gets fleas
If your pet catches fleas, it won’t take long before the fleas infest your house – which is never pleasant!
But it’s nothing to worry about, and the problem can be solved as long as you follow the process and make sure everything in the house is cleaned thoroughly. Here are our tips:
- First hoover thoroughly, as this brings all of the eggs that are lying in the carpet to the top of the pile.
- Then use a targeted house flea spray. Your pets have to be out of the house at the time, birds need to be kept away, reptile and fish tanks need to be covered. This kills the eggs.
- Wash bedding and towels, pet and human, at 60° – you don’t need to use anything specialist as the heat will kill any fleas and eggs.
- Ten days later repeat this process – it’s always this second phase that people leave out but it is crucial!
- Roughly it works out as one can per three bedroom house.
- Don’t forget to treat the car in the same fashion.
Of course, it’s much easier to ensure your pet is protected against fleas in the first place.
