  • In-patients will be safely transferred to Tonbridge on Friday afternoon, and back to Sevenoaks on Monday morning.
  • Saturday daytime consults will run as normal at both practices.
  • Normal OOH service will be available from Tonbridge across the weekend.

Thank you for your understanding!

From,
All the team at Pennard Vets

Kennel Cough and your dog, the facts

Posted on 27 May 2021
Kennel Cough and your dog, the facts

There seems to be an increase in Kennel Cough cases at the moment so we thought we would remind you of what to look out for.

Kennel cough is the name given to infectious bronchitis in dogs. There are a number of different bacteria and viruses that cause the illness.

Symptoms:

  • A forceful hacking cough, a bit like they have something stuck in their throat.
  • Runny nose and sneezing.
  • Occasionally they can be lethargic.

Kennel Cough is not normally dangerous however, in puppies and old dogs it can be serious.

It’s highly contagious and can spread quickly, either through the air or on shared items such as bowls and toys.

There is no single test to diagnose kennel cough but if your dog has symptoms and has been in contact with other dogs then its normally safe to diagnose.

Treatment

Dogs normally recover without treatment after three weeks.

However, the vet may prescribe anti-inflammatories to reduce any inflammation and antibiotics to kill the bacteria.

It’s important that you don’t allow your dog to socialise with other dogs and try not to use collars as they can aggravate the cough.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us either on our PetsApp or give us a call.
